Whitney’s response to “Pulling Back the Curtain”

This article helped me realize that there is a lot more work that goes into public speaking then I realized. I thought it was interesting that some “live” broadcasts had been previously taped and edited to make them sound like better speakers. It really takes a talented person to be a good public speaker because it’s definitely a lot different then everyday conversation. Radio is much different than T.V. because you are listening to only their voice and you have nothing to look at. The way your interview, conversation, or voice comes across lets the audience know what type of speaker you are.

I think you are right, it does take a talented person to be a good public speaker. It is something that would take a lot of work and practice to get everything down right. People on the radio do have it a little easier because they don’t have to worry about any non-verbal communication. When you are on T.V., you not only have to think about the way you sound, but also they way you look and act.

It is always strange for me when I know a voice on the radio very well, and then for the first time see what the person actually looks like. Often my mental picture of who they are is completely different from reality. I think in some ways, radio speaking is more difficult than TV, because all you have to work with for communication is your words and inflections.

You are definately right that a lot more work goes into a finished product than most may realize. I agree with one of the comments about it taking a very talented person to be a great public speaker.

Too true.
