Cy on Filtered Images

Posted by cn787 on February 6, 2007

Using the picture from class of the person walking with a bicycle helmet, I wanted to add a more urban feel to the scene, as well as a sense of tumult and confusion to reflect the difficult issue of gang activity in Chicago.  I first used a film grain filter to literally make the image more grainy. The speckles that the film grain filter created became smeared by an angled strokes filter, adding motion and distortion to the image.  Finally, I used a dark strokes filter to shade the image. The original gradient of the dark strokes filter made the image too menacing so I increased the white intensity, giving the image a more abstract feel.

Filters are a great way to change the feel or meaning of an image, but even simple color and lighting adjustments can achieve the same effects (often in more subtle ways). The text mirrors the image in portraying the struggle of adolescents in urban areas, and as the helmet implies, describes the more positive activities that are available in the inner city.

Mike on Filtered Images

Posted by pasch on February 6, 2007

For this assignment I found an image of a typical city and wanted to create the illusion of an explosion.  I did this by applying the wind filter so that the image would look like the “blast” is pushing everything in the image away from the center of the “explosion”.  The next filter I used was Lens Flare in order to create a bright center in the image to depict the light that would be caused by the “explosion”.  Lastly I used the Lighting Effects filter to put more focus on the center of the image (the explosion) and this is done because with Lighting Effects and more specifically the Spotlight feature, darkens the corners of the image.  All of these filters I believe allowed me to create the illusion of an explosion where one did not accually occur.

I thought working with these filters was not the easiest thing and that is only because the filters only allow you do certain things and if you are not experienced with photoshop you may not know exactly what you have to work with.  As for the text that I put with my image I found an artice that talked about all the new shows that have nuclear explosions as their main theme such as 24, Heroes, and Jerico.  Without the text one may thing the image just looks like a bright light but with the text a reader knows the image is of an “explosion”.

John’s Filtered Image

Posted by johnkitners on February 6, 2007

I picked an image of myself playing hockey. I am using the filters to show my intense focus on the game in front of me. I used diffuse glow to draw the focus of the picture to myself, dry brush to add texture to myself, and angled strokes to show that I am focused while in the game.
